What is the difference between inter-molecular hydrogen bonding and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding?

intermolecular hydrogen bonding means...the hydrogen atom of one molecule forms a bond (nt exaclty a bond..as in sharing of electrons jus strong attraction.) , with higly electronegative atoms of other molecules...lyk hydrogen atom of one water molecule with oxygen atome of another...

but in intramolecular H bonding..the H atom forms a bond with electronegative atom of the same molecule..observed in some Ring organic compounds...

guess dis helped..:D

cheers..What is the difference between inter-molecular hydrogen bonding and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding?Inter molecular H-bonding is a bond that was formed between the H atom of one molecule with the more electro negative atom gennerally Hetero atoms of the another molecule.

For example, Acetic acid generally exists as dimer due to this inter molecular H- bonding.

Intra molecular H-bonding is a bond that was formed between the H atom of one molecule with the more electro negative atom gennerally Hetero atoms of the same molecule.

For example, in Salysilic acid the H-bond formed between the H-atom of the COOH group with the the O-atom of the OH group that was present in the same molecule and Ortho to the COOH group.

Inter molecular H-bond formed in between the molecules where as in the case of the Intra molecular H-bonding, it was formed with in the molecule.

The MP or BP increases due to the intra molecular bond than in the case of inter molecular H- bonding. What is the difference between inter-molecular hydrogen bonding and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding?Inter molecular hydrogen bonding exists mutually between the two molecules you are considering. For example, two molecules of ethanol or a molecule of ethanol and a molecule of ethanone or water.

While, intra molecular hydrogen bonding exists between the two elements in the same molecule or within the molecule. For eg. in DNA.
