LGBT: What is the difference between an inter-sex person and a hermaphrodite?

:shakes head: Why can't people get this? This question comes up several times a week.....

Humans CANNOT be hermaphrodites. Hermaphroditic organisms have a complete set of both sex organs. That only happens in worms, snails and other lower forms of life, not people.

Humans can be born with some mixture of tissues, but NEVER a complete set of both. These people are called "Intersex(ed)". It is considered derogatory to refer to them as "hermaphrodites" as that is equating them with worms and snails.

Also, although they may have a mixture of tissues, they usually have firmly developed gender identities. Meaning they identify as men or women and not as some third sex. They simply have a birth condition. So have some respect!

Only lower forms of life like snails and worms are hermaphroditic.

Humans are not.LGBT: What is the difference between an inter-sex person and a hermaphrodite? It's amazing that people are actually in denial about it, reading some of the answers given. *rolls eyes*.

I've never heard the phrase 'an inter-sex' person before but hermaphrodites can either be a male with female 'bits', or a female with male 'bits'.
