Intake air is sucked in by the turbo then goes through the intercooler to cool it down to allow a denser charge of air to be drawn into the cylinders. Denser air provides more complete combustion and therefore more power. Intercoolers can be air to air where ram air goes through the fins to cool the air in the intercooler or it can have coolant like the radiator that circulates through the core to cool the air.
actually diesel engines don't need compressed hot air exactly the opposite. they use intercoolers also large intercoolers in fact. cold air is denser and thats what a diesel engine needs the more air in the cylinder the more air there is to compress thus heating it up more and causing a much more complete combustion. also the cooler the air going in a diesel the cooler the exhaust is coming out and exhaust gas temperature(EGT's) are very important to watch in a diesel engine especially under heavy loads or towingHow does the inter cooler in a car engine function?simple diesel engine needs compressed hot air,....
but cars having turbo heat the air too much to an undesirable temp.
so knocking arises .
to control that an inter cooler is used in between turbo and engine.
it is nothing but pipe with fins outside.
similar to fins 2 wheeler engine.
hot air is cooled by passing fluid.
