If two engines have the same 8th place vin but they are 10 years apart can you inter change them?

both engines come from same type of car and are positioned the same in engine compartment. does the 8th place refer to the engine block it self. meaning that you should be able to mate the existing trany with the other block. If two engines have the same 8th place vin but they are 10 years apart can you inter change them?Digits 4 to 8: Vehicle Description Series

These digits represent items such as the car or truck line, series, body type, restraint system, and engine. Since they are assigned at the manufacturer's discretion, they are not always in the same order. For example, General Motors uses positions (4) and (5) for car-line series, position (6) for body style, position (7) for the restraint system (type of seat belts, etc.), and position (8) for engine type. On the other hand, Ford uses position (4) for the restraint system, (5) for the designation, (6) and (7) for the body type, and position (8) for the engine.

So no, as stated different manufacturers use different codes, and just because the 8th position is the same doesn't mean it's the same engine. If two engines have the same 8th place vin but they are 10 years apart can you inter change them?yes you can, the 8th number mean the eng style, size and parts code the 10th is just the year of the eng and the carIf two engines have the same 8th place vin but they are 10 years apart can you inter change them?depends on mfg. While the usa has some stds, other vin locations can mean other things,
